Question of the Week: Does it matter if I peel my garlic cloves before planting? 🧄

Great question! The short answer is: No, it doesn`t really matter whether the garlic wrappers are left on or peeled off. We`ve planted millions of cloves over the years and haven`t noticed any difference in how they grow.

So, especially if you`re planting a large quantity of garlic, we`d recommend just keeping the wrappers on. It will save you so much time and energy while still giving you the same great results.

Of course, this is just our experience, and we know every grower has their own style. So, do what works best for you and feels right! ❤

Wondering how to apply our 5-2-2 Fertilizer? 🧄

1) Mix Fertilizer Into the Soil

Before planting, mix fertilizer into the soil at double the normal rate—use 4 oz (1/2 cup) of fertilizer for every 4 sq. ft. of soil. To save time on planting day, you can complete this step up to a month in advance.

2) Sprinkle on Top After Planting

Once your garlic is planted, sprinkle more fertilizer on top of the soil before adding mulch. Use the regular rate here—2 oz (1/4 cup) for every 4 sq. ft. of soil.

Question of the Week: How should I mulch my garlic after planting?

Mulching is key to protecting your garlic through the winter and ensuring a healthy, robust harvest next summer. After planting your garlic cloves, we recommend covering them with 3-6" of mulch.

Mulching helps retain moisture, suppresses weeds, and provides insulation during winter. We recommend using straw, shredded leaves, or even grass clippings—whatever you’ve got handy! After mulching your garlic, it is time to sit back and wait until spring.

P.S. Remember to keep the mulch loose so the garlic can breathe. In the spring, make sure the garlic makes its way through the mulch. It usually does fine by itself, but sometimes it may need some help. So, check on your garlic sprouts as soon as the snow melts!

🌿 Enrich your soil – Mix in compost or organic fertilizer to give your garlic the nutrients it needs to thrive.

🌟 Give it a boost – Perform a garlic fertilization soak before planting to stimulate healthy growth.

📏 Planting depth & spacing – Plant cloves 3" deep and space them 6-9" apart to allow plenty of room for BIG bulbs to form.

🌱 Cover with soil – Gently cover the tips of your garlic with about 1" of soil.

🍂 Mulch it up – Lay down 3-6" of mulch to insulate and protect your garlic from the cold and retain moisture in the soil.

In Wisconsin, we typically plant 6 weeks prior to freeze, in mid-October. If you live in a northern region of the US, we recommend you plant at the same time as us. Planting time is just a couple of weeks away, and we can`t wait!! ✨

Southern growers typically plant later than in the northern regions. If this is you, we highly recommend reaching out to your local extension office to get more information about growing garlic in your area. ❤ ...
