Pehoski Purple – A beautiful purple garlic with a strong, pungent, garlicy flavor that’s unique and different in appearance and taste while easily grown by most gardeners in the US. As described by local farm-to-table chefs, Pehoski Purple’s strong garlic flavor provides three different tastes at the front, middle, and back of the palate. It is a very versatile garlic in the kitchen that fits well into most dishes while being easy to peel and chop. A creamy butter flavor is found when roasted, but provides a kick of heat when raw! The flavor stays a while reminding one of the pleasures of the garlicy meal eaten.
Pehoski grows well in most US regions and flourishes in cold hardy areas of the US. It has been grown in Wisconsin by the Polish community since the 1970’s where Chris Pehoski found the characteristics of this garlic unlike any other, so he nurtured this garlic for years to improve the variety and increase size. In 1988, John Swenson from Seed Savers named the garlic Pehoski Purple SSE #12870 after seeing the stewardship Chris put into this garlic strain. The bulb now easily sizes up to 2.5” with 8-10 large cloves per bulb. The outer wrapper provides a beautiful coloring that can change by each field or garden it is grown in, but always brings out a lush vibrant purple color. The clove wrappers have a distinct glossy brownish purple color that are tight to clove which makes this garlic store 9 or more months bringing a homegrown garlic flavor into early spring after a previous summer harvest. Since Chris started passing his prized garlic on from gardener to gardener, it has become a local favorite. This garlic has been the staple garlic at the Dane County Farmers Market in Madison, WI which is one of the largest producer only Farmers Market in the nation where Lon Gunderson has sold Pehoski Purple for over 20 years. It was kept as mainly Wisconsin grown garlic until about 5 years ago, when it was shared with Keene Garlic whom has sold it to hundreds of gardeners and farmers that have successfully and excitedly grown it throughout the US. At Martha’s farm, we have grown it for the last 4 years and we have found it has……. Many professional photographers ask for this purple garlic for professional pictures as it brings a brilliant color to garlic and food photos.
Note: Garlic is an agricultural crop that is subject to crop loss due to conditions beyond our control. This can even occur in the curing stage. We check each bulb before shipping them to you, so if there are any quality issues, we may need to substitute. We rarely need to do this, but it does happen. If it is necessary, we will substitute with a similar garlic, but if you have any comments on this please fill out the comment section like a back up garlic or no substitutions. We still want to get you some great garlic, so please choose how you would like us to proceed with your order if the item you ordered is not available. We do set aside some great garlic in case we do have to substitute garlic!
