Question of the Week: I harvested my garlic and it looks like a green onion. What am I doing wrong?

You are harvesting too early! Your garlic isn`t fully matured yet. The bulb will significantly size up in the last 3-4 weeks before harvest. 🧄

In south central WI, we harvest our garlic in mid-late July. Each planting zone will have its own harvest window (earlier harvest for those south of us and just a bit later for those north of us.)

It is always a good idea to start checking your garlic a few weeks before harvest. You may even want to harvest a bulb every few days to see how they are developing. 🙂

Question of the Week: What are garlic scapes? 🌱

Garlic scapes are the delightful, edible flower stalks that grow from hardneck garlic. They have a subtle garlic flavor and a wonderfully tender-crisp texture that adds a special touch to your springtime dishes!

Scapes appear from the center of the leaves and should be harvested once they`ve made a full curl. They can be snapped off where they emerge from the leaves. Fun fact: harvesting scapes actually helps your garlic plant put more energy into growing larger bulbs—so it`s a win-win!

We love using garlic scapes to make a vibrant, garlicky pesto, but they’re also amazing in dips, stews, stir-fries, pizzas, and much more. 🫶

"We started growing garlic because we fell in love with how it elevates a recipe. Keene Garlic has such a great variety of options and the quality is amazing! We used wool pellets as mulch for our garlic this year and it’s been amazing, not only does it maintain moisture, it also slowly releases nutrients for the garlic as well! We can’t wait to harvest early this summer!"

"Most sheep producers in the Midwest don’t have the breed types and/or production environments that favor high-quality fiber for use in clothing, usually the wool is coarser and would be itchy if in contact with the skin. Sheep producers have a hard time selling this wool, so sadly the reality is that it ends up in the landfill.

This is where we step in! We pelletize this underutilized sheep wool to use as a natural fertilizer in your garden. 🧄 GARLIC HARVEST ALERT 🧄

Grown by @pacificgardening in Southern CA, zone 10a/10b. Can you believe this was their first time growing garlic?! ☀️

Growing garlic in such a warm climate comes with pros and cons.

The positive is that "the weather is essentially perfect so you really can`t mess up, and since there is no real winter and zero frost, these essentially grew in 5.5 months, which seems pretty fast compared to 7 months elsewhere."

On the other hand, the hard part is that "none of the standard timelines apply so it`s hard to find info on the internet."

"When I received the bulbs from you guys, I put them in the refrigerator for a month or two and then planted in mid November. I found such conflicting information [about growing garlic in the south] that it was hard to parse.

I watched the stalks dying back (and the scape on the hardneck) as an indicator of when to harvest. I`ve seen people in this climate harvest around the standard June/July time, but these seemed ready and I checked one and it looked like a garlic bulb!"
