Question of the Week: I planted your garlic last fall. The green scapes came up (they look like onion tops) before hard winter set in here. I have fertilized one time since winter and was going to again, but the fertilizer bag says "Do not fertilize after the scapes appear." What should I do?

What you`re seeing now are garlic LEAVES, which is exactly what should be happening this time of year! Garlic SCAPES won’t show up until May or June, depending on your growing zone.
When the scapes do appear, they’ll look like thin, curly green stalks emerging from the center of the plant—not to be confused with the leaf growth happening now.
So yes, it`s still a good time to fertilize! Garlic is a heavy feeder and the fertilizer will help the bulbs grow big and healthy.

Here are a few helpful tips for when your order arrives:
✨ They might not be pretty—and that’s okay!
A little shriveling, sprouting, or a blemish here and there is totally normal. These won’t affect how your potatoes grow!
✨ When to plant?
You can plant as soon as the ground can be worked. Some gardeners wait a bit to let things dry out—aim for soil temps around 45°F for best results.
✨ Not planting right away?
If you won`t be planting your potatoes within 2 weeks of arrival, just store them in a cool, dark place with good airflow.

Yes, your garlic will be okay! The tips of the leaves may look damaged, but this won`t impact the bulbs underground. They will still grow just as big and beautiful, and you will have a great harvest! 🧄

Question of the Week: How should I fertilize my garlic? 🌱
Here’s what works for us:
✔️ Start fertilizing when you see the first green shoots in early spring.
✔️ Apply every 10-14 days, about 3-4 times per season, until the garlic scapes appear.
✔️ Just sprinkle it on top of the soil or mulch—rain or watering will do the rest!

Every spring, we take a photo around this time to see how our garlic is growing compared to past years. 🌱📷
This spring, our garlic is a bit smaller than usual. With the colder weather and lack of warmth, those little sprouts just haven’t had much of a boost yet!
That said, we’re seeing a germination rate of over 99%, and the sprouts are looking strong and healthy. 🌱
Interestingly, in years when the garlic grows faster early on, we tend to see more yellow tips—usually a sign that the shoots emerged and got burnt by the cold. ❄️
This year? That’s not happening as much. It looks like our garlic is going with the slow and steady approach. 🙂

They’ve already been mostly hardened off, but if you want to give them a little extra strength before planting, here’s what we recommend:
🌤 set them outside for a few hours during the day
🌙 bring them in at night
This helps them adjust to sun, wind, and temperature swings. Also, keep them lightly watered until planting time. Just enough to keep the soil moist—not saturated.
