Question of the Week: What should I do once my garlic is done curing? 🧄

First—congratulations on a successful harvest and cure! Now it’s time to protect your investment so you can enjoy your homegrown garlic for months to come. 🫶

Step 1: Don`t Overdo the Curing

Once curing is complete, remove any fans and avoid placing garlic near a dehumidifier. Over-drying can shorten shelf life.

Step 2: (Optional) Clip & Clean

Want tidy bulbs for storage? Clip necks to about ½" and roots to about ¼". We do this for shipping neat bulbs to customers, but if you`re just using your garlic at home, it`s really not necessary!

Step 3: Store with Care

✔ Use breathable containers like baskets or crates with holes—never plastic bags.
✔ Keep in a cool, dark, dry place, away from heat and sunlight.
✔ Handle gently—treat bulbs like eggs to avoid bruising that shortens storage life.
✔ Ideal storage conditions for July harvests:

🧄 Aug–Sept: 50–75°F, 40–60% humidity
🧄 Oct–Early Spring: 35–55°F, 40–60% humidity

We’ve seen garlic grow really well in metal raised beds — even in cold northern climates. Many of our customers have had success year after year. 👏🧄

That said, we also want to offer a heads-up: freeze/thaw cycles are a real risk in northern zones, especially in metal beds. ❄

Even if you have successfully grown garlic in metal raised beds for years, mother nature can be unpredictable.

Because metal heats and cools so quickly, these beds can amplify soil temperature swings. As the weather fluctuates, the soil can freeze, thaw, and refreeze — and that cycle can heave garlic cloves upward and expose roots.

If you love your metal beds (and we get it — they look great and last forever!), here are a few ways to protect your garlic:

✔ add a thick layer of mulch after planting
✔ choose a spot that gets full sun in fall/winter
✔ consider raised bed liners to insulate your soil

Question of the Week: How do I know when my garlic is done curing? 🧄

Great question! The curing process typically takes about 3 weeks, and there is a clear sign that you can look for to know when it`s complete!👇

After harvest, we trim the stems to about 6–9". At this stage—like you can see in the photo—the inside of the neck is green. As the garlic cures, that green gradually dries out and turns brown.

✅ Your garlic is fully cured when there’s little to no green left inside the neck.

To double-check, you can clip the neck down to about 1" above the bulb and peek inside—this is something we do anyway as part of cleaning and prepping garlic for storage. If it’s dry and brown, you’re good to go!

Your garlic is curing...now what? It`s time to prep the soil! 👍

Best practices for preparing to plant:

✔️ Rotate your crops: Avoid planting garlic, onions, or shallots where they’ve grown in the past 2 years to prevent disease buildup.
✔️ Test your soil: Home soil tests are easy to use and help you understand what your soil needs.
✔️ Prep your bed: Clear out old plant material, then mix in compost and fertilizer to restore nutrients.
✔️ Loosen the soil: Right before planting, work the soil until it’s loose and fluffy for better root growth.

💡Pro Tip: Can`t avoid reusing the same spot? Plant a quick cover crop to boost the soil before planting!

What should I plant after garlic?

🧄 Light Feeders: Because garlic is a heavy feeder, try light feeders like greens or peas just after harvest or next spring.
🧄 Second Crop: In warmer climates, you may be able to squeeze in a second, shorter crop right after harvest.
