  • Long Day–  Produces well with 14 to 15 hours of sunlight
  • Long Storage Capabilities, known to store until April in the right conditions
  • Easy to grow
  • 110-120 days from transplant
  • 3-4″ sized onion bulbs!
  • PLANT INFORMATION: Our Certified Organic Onion & Leek Plants are greenhouse-grown on small family farms in Wisconsin. Arriving in soil-filled containers, these live seedlings are partially hardened off.
  • SHIPPING INFORMATION: All plants ship in April ONLY. Upon checkout, choose the April ship window that works best for you. Please note that ship dates may shift slightly due to Mother Nature. Care for your plants indoors until planting time, if needed.
  • REGIONAL ONION PLANTING: All our onions are long-day or intermediate-day varieties, ideal for gardeners from Maine to Northern Texas. Not recommended for short-day regions. If your region requires earlier planting, consider our Onion Sets that begin shipping late February. If you require onion sets/plants earlier than late February, we recommend finding a source closer to your region. For more information, see our Keene Garlic Seasonal Order Shipping Guide.
  • SPECIAL CARE: These plants are a favorite among gardeners and farmers for their abundant, high-quality harvests. They’re more delicate than sets and need a little extra attention when they first arrive. Because shipping can be stressful, monitor tracking, unpack immediately, give a light watering, and begin hardening them off slowly for the best planting success. Although they arrive pre-hardened, easing them back into outdoor conditions with a gentle, gradual re-hardening process ensures strong, healthy growth. If you have any issues, contact us right away—we’re here to help. With proper early care, you’ll be rewarded with exceptional onions, shallots and leeks.

Basic Onion Growing Info

Sun Requirement: Onions require full sun – the more the better! Therefore, avoid planting next to crops that might shade your onions.

Soil Fertility: Adding compost or a balanced organic fertilizer is essential for growing healthy onions, especially if your soil fertility is low. For the best growth and yield, onions need fertilizer at planting time and additional side dressing throughout the growing season. Our Keene Garlic Fertilizer is great for all alliums!

Planting: Onions grow best in raised beds or raised rows at least 4″ high. Typically, onions can be planted as early as 4 to 6 weeks before the last estimated spring frost.
