Organic Superior Seed Potato

Organic Superior Seed Potatoes – Early White Classic: Crisp Chips & Fluffy Bakes
Superior is the benchmark early white potato that growers trust for reliable, uniform harvests. Bred by the University of Wisconsin, Superior is an early‑season option ideal for shorter growing seasons—it produces many medium‑sized tubers that store well. These smooth, oval‑to‑oblong spuds have lightly buff skin and firm white flesh. Selected for outstanding chipping quality, they also bake fluffy, boil clean, fry beautifully, and mash to a silky finish. Unlike Kennebec, Superior will not “green” as easily when exposed to light. As an early‑to‑mid‑season variety, Superior sizes up quickly, cures clean, and—despite its shorter dormancy—stores well, keeping your pantry stocked with versatile spuds.

🌟 Why Gardeners and Cooks Love Superior Potatoes

  • Culinary versatility: Bred for chips, yet also superb for baking, boiling, frying, mashing, scalloped & roasted dishes.
  • Early‑season advantage: Perfect for shorter seasons—tubers size early and stay uniform with minimal internal defects.
  • Pantry‑friendly: Stores well and washes clean, with less tendency to green under incidental light.
  • Nutrient‑dense simplicity: Naturally fat‑free, cholesterol‑free, gluten‑free; about 110 calories per medium potato, with vitamin C, potassium, fiber, and vitamin B6 to support immunity, heart health, and digestion.
  • Grower tips: Shows moderate resistance to common scab; manage for late blight/Verticillium with rotation, certified seed, and consistent moisture.

🌱 Seed Potato Growing Information – Certified Seed Potatoes

  • Soil: Potatoes thrive in deep, loamy soil that holds moisture yet drains well. They adapt to less than ideal soils but produce best with plenty of organic matter. Create nutrient‑rich soil with our Veggies NKO Organic Fertilizer for healthier plants and higher yields.
  • Planting Time: Plant as soon as the ground can be worked, ideally when soil reaches ~45°F. Timing varies by region.   Potatoes tolerate light frost but may need protection from hard, late frosts. The Farmers Almanac Planting Calendar by zip code is a great resource for planting times.
  • Bed Feet per Pound: 1-lb bag plants approximately 6-8 row feet, depending on the variety. If a seed potato is over 1 inch in diameter, you can cut them into pieces. Leave 1 – 2 eyes per piece. Average is 6-8 pieces/lb., more for Fingerlings. Average planting rate: 10-12″ apart, in rows 30-36″ apart.
  • Water: Consistent watering is key. Provide ~1″ of water per week. Stop watering once plants naturally die back.

📝 Product Details – Superior Organic Seed Potatoes

  • Storage until planting: Remove potatoes from box and bag. If eyes are not yet visible, we recommend placing them in light & warmth, ~60-70F, to awaken them out of dormancy.
  • Natural characteristics: Minor sprouting, shriveling, or blemishes are normal for seed potatoes for planting and do not affect performance. If planting is delayed beyond 2 weeks, keep seed potatoes in a cool, dark place until ready to plant.
  • Variety selection: Choose seed potato varieties suited to your USDA hardiness zone.
  • Shipping & planting: At checkout, select shipping dates that match your regional planting times, and plant once soil is workable, ideally around 45°F.
